Scientists are once again watching the H5N1 avian influenza with heightened concern. Since 2020 it has caused unprecedented outbreaks in poultry. In early 2024 its mutations began crossing over barriers infecting over 50 types of mammals, today it is now able to infect over 200 mammalians species. In the United States it has even established itself in dairy cattle. Scientists are saying it is now a global problem; as a disease of wild animals, it is out of control. 

The virus’ ability to infect such a wide range of species, including marine mammals and carnivores, demonstrates its potential to jump to humans. Recent genetic sequencing of the circulating H5N1 virus shows mutations that allow it to be more receptive to human cells, bringing it closer to becoming human-to-human transmissible. 

The H5N1 has been followed and studied extensively for the past two decades. Unlike the corona virus that caused the COVID-19 Pandemic, the virulence, structure, and origin of the H5N1 virus are very similar to the influenza virus that caused the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. In addition, the pathophysiology (development of a disease in the human body) of both viruses is also similar including a death rate of 50%.

At its height, COVID-19 had a mortality rate of 1.2%. Those with comorbidities were at higher risk for severe complications and even death. Its difficult societal effects were caused more by the mitigations of lockdowns and social distancing mandated by the government. Conversely, experts state that the1918 Influenza Pandemic with its high death killed more people in one year than in World War I and the Black Death Bubonic Plague combined. It was the lethality of the virus itself that caused the devastating effects on society.

The information and training materials provided on this website uses the 1918 Influenza as a model (both its pathophysiology and societal effects) in addition to what we've learned from COVID-19 providing a comprehensive plan. Updated PDF documents and cooinciding PowerPoint presentations are provided for free download for individual, church, and corporate use.  

Church history tells us that Christianity grew in the dark times of early pandemics and plagues through the kindness and generosity shown to non-believers who were also suffering. The objective of this ministry is to prepare and equip the Body of Christ to minister during a lethal pandemic caused by the H5N1 avian influenza. With this equipping, we would be able to safely and effectively care for the sick and bring the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into the crisis.
